[OSENWORLD] Jo Yu-ri, who recently gained international attention for her role as No. 222 in Netflix’s Squid Game Season 3, is stepping back into the spotlight as a singer with a brand-new EP. The multi-talented performer is set to release her third mini album, Episode 25, on July 14 at 6 PM KST via major digital music platforms.
Episode 25 marks Jo’s first release in nearly two years and captures both her artistic evolution and personal growth. The title itself signifies a turning point—her transition into a new chapter at the age of 25.
The lead single “Goodbye Now!” is a vibrant pop-rock track blending rich band instrumentation with Jo’s crisp and expressive vocals. The song encapsulates the bittersweet emotions of parting, delivering emotional depth with a breezy, summer-perfect energy.
In a recent Q&A, Jo opened up about the making of Episode 25, her musical return, and what 25 means to her as an artist.
OSEN: It’s been nearly two years since your last album. How does it feel to return with this mini album?
Jo: I’m incredibly excited and happy to reconnect with fans through new music. I’ve been looking forward to sharing this project, and I truly hope listeners can connect with it and enjoy it as much as I enjoyed creating it.
OSEN: The title represents a turning point at 25. What has changed the most for you as an artist?
Jo: Starting to act brought a lot of new experiences, and as a singer, I feel that the stories I want to tell have started to shift as well. To be honest… the biggest change I’ve noticed is that my stamina isn’t quite what it used to be! (laughs)
OSEN: There’s a clear theme of challenge in this album, especially with your shift to band music. What was the biggest challenge during production?
Jo: Trying out band music—something I’ve always loved—was one of the biggest challenges. I also worked on changing my vocal tone to match the genre. Visually, I went for a fresh look too—I even cut my hair short! Fans will definitely see a different side of me.
OSEN: Is there any particular reaction or label you hope to receive from this album?
Jo: I’d love to be known as “a trusted voice”—someone people know will always deliver quality music. And it would be amazing to hear reactions like, “She has this kind of vocal color too?” or “She really suits band music!” I want to keep making music that makes people curious and excited every time.
OSEN: Tell us about the title track “Goodbye Now!”—what’s the story behind it?
Jo: It’s a pop-rock track with rich band sounds that gently express the emotional distance growing between people. When I first heard it, it felt perfect for summer. I really focused on delivering a clear, refreshing vocal, so I hope it becomes part of your summer playlist.
OSEN: You were involved in songwriting and production. What was that experience like?
Jo: This album is filled with my input—from lyrics to concept, visuals, and styling. It wasn’t always easy, but seeing it all come together made me incredibly proud.
OSEN: The music video seems to reflect the genre shift as well. What can fans expect?
Jo: It has a completely different vibe from my past videos. There’s a dramatic, story-driven element to it, and filming was a lot of fun. I think fans will enjoy discovering this new side of me.
OSEN: You pre-released “The Time of Dogs and Cats.” Why did you choose that song? And how was working with producer GuReum?
Jo: I loved the song so much, I couldn’t wait to share it. I thought fans would enjoy it instantly, and thankfully they did. Collaborating with GuReum—an artist I deeply admire—made the whole process even more exciting.
OSEN: The EP includes five tracks with very different styles. Was that intentional?
Jo: Definitely. I listen to a wide range of genres, and I think that diversity naturally came through in the album. Each track has its own unique vibe, so I hope fans take time to enjoy them all.
OSEN: You’re active in both music and acting. What’s the biggest difference between Jo Yu-ri the actress and Jo Yu-ri the singer?
Jo: While the tone and delivery may vary depending on the medium, I don’t see them as entirely separate. It’s all part of how I express myself, so I don’t focus on showing totally different versions of me. I just try to enjoy both and grow in each area.
OSEN: Your acting in Squid Game drew global attention. Did that experience impact how you approached this album?
Jo: I wrapped up filming before starting the album, so there wasn’t a direct impact. But I think the emotions and lessons I learned through acting naturally influenced my expression in music. And with the timing of both releases overlapping, I was lucky to show multiple sides of myself.
OSEN: Looking back, what does being 25 mean to you? Any goals for the rest of 2025?
Jo: This year has been full of unforgettable experiences. My first solo fan concert was such a joyful, precious time. I’ve been happy being active in both fields, and I hope to carry that happiness through the rest of the year.
OSEN: Any final words to your fans?
Jo: To my GLASSY—thank you for always being by my side. You give me so much strength. I put my heart into this album, and I hope you love it. I’ll keep working hard to share music and moments that make you proud!
